The human tendency to self cherish is the main dish of our existence. Humans have been eating it up, probably since the beginning of our species. In addition to the main dish is a set of side dishes called consumerism, capitalism, and commodification. Ever seductive, they add endless flavors and textures onto the main dish. I suppose it might be the case that plain old self cherishing gets kind of dull after awhile. It’s so much more exciting to be the hot, new product on the block. Or the respected, reliable old one.
My visit to Halong Bay in the north of Vietnam was one of those few visits where reality lived up to my expectations. All the pictures and stories from the travel promotions were dead accurate. This was not a place of beaches and rolling waves – this was a place of geographic drama on a grand scale.
Things could change. Things could change if only I tried, if only people tried. If only eyes could see what can be done; if only hands would set to work, determined to make a difference; if only instead of asking for one, we ourselves would lend a helping hand. If there’s still a ray of hope at the far end of the shore then something must be done, someone must take the first step, someone must begin to pay attention to some of the neglected things. It sure can be you; it sure will be me.
Simply put, whether metaphorical or literal, when it feels like the end of things maybe the best thing to be done is to sit down and wait for what comes next. In every battle, you’re required to find your way from where you are to where you want and need to be. Sometimes that works out. Sometimes not.
Modern, reward based training has not only proven to be as effective as more traditional training methods. It has actually stretched our definitions of what is possible in training our dogs. We are teaching our dogs more behaviours more quickly than ever before. The most exciting part is that the dogs themselves are teaching us how to go even further into these new frontiers!
