Abandonment from or by one’s muse can muddy the waters of a writer’s creative flow, but sometimes life’s eddies and deltas beckon us on warm inlets of tempting diversions. I’m grateful that over the years of my comings and goings from my commitment to writing the words have been generous in returning, much like the tide.
Reminiscences of a Chemo Grad
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, once I got over the initial shock and faced the long treatment process—which spun out ahead of me like a thread unraveling from a dropped spool— I think the scariest part was the thought that I might have to have chemotherapy.
The Agony of Defeat
We as a society honor our victors, the winners, the ones who beat our agreed upon opponent, our enemy. Yet at what cost do our celebrations over the loss of another aid in our consciousness, our minds and our hearts?
Picture Book
You are witnessing changes to the English language and its use. You are now part of a world of technology, computers and new methods of communication that guide the form of language used in the present century. There are few words, little substance; it is a book of images to tell your story.
Siblings: Part 1
The love of one’s siblings is a gift we might often take for granted. Very rarely does a child have a say regarding the family planning conducted by the parents — who would want such responsibilities at a young age, anyway? — and so the age gaps could be small, with a family of young ones grouped together and able to play and develop both collectively or individually; or conversely, there could be a whole decade between a person and their siblings. This, then, becomes a conflict. A clash of needs, desires, even wills. It also becomes the delineation of responsibilities.
FACE to FACE: The Olympic Dreams of Tayler Wilton and John Leslie
Unless you have traveled down that road yourself, it’s hard to imagine just how hard a journey it is to become an Olympic or Paralympic athlete. The dedication, commitment and personal cost to these athletes is beyond what most of us will ever experience.
The Climate Crisis and Our Attachment to Comfort
I recall the mother of my sister’s childhood friend who drank a case of Diet Coke daily. You read that right. A case. Maybe not a full a case everyday, but she probably averaged that over the long run. She didn’t live to 50.

John Davidson’s Story
John Davidson is one of my personal heroes. He is an unflinching beacon of courage, strength, compassion and kindness. Above all, John Davidson is a father whose actions speak very, very loudly, and an inspiration for anyone who takes the few minutes to hear his story. I’m asking that you be one of these people. I promise that if you are, you will be incredibly moved by the huge commitment this parent makes to both his child, and to his community as a whole.
My Father’s Legacy
There are many ways to remember a persons’ life. One way is to review their history, the empirical data of dates, events, and milestones. Things like when were they born, where they were educated, employed, and who they married highlight the details of their life. But, that only tells part of the story and misses the really important parts.
