Growing up, I had a hard time in Physical Education. I couldn’t run or do jumping jacks or any kind of high intensity activity that raised my heart rate beyond a certain level. I had a doctor’s note to prove it, but that didn’t usually stop some P.E. teachers from bullying me just as much as my fellow students did.
Coming to Terms With Orlando
Before I start this, I should probably get a few things out on the table. I am a man. I am white. I am heterosexual; in the current vernacular I am cisgender. And I don’t believe in a god. I tell you these things up front because in some corners of the Internet these things […]
Excellence Versus Success
After my son’s prize giving a few weeks ago, I’m still dwelling on the topic of how schools reward excellence in their students and today I’m extending it to Universities. Do the learners / pupils / students who do not excel academically get public recognition for their efforts and merits?
Bullying, Fear, And The Full Moon (Part Four)
Now that research has shown that childhood bullying produces long-term detrimental effects, it is even more urgent that every effort be made not only to put an end to bullying but also to seek out and embrace and protect its victims, to help them summon the courage to be who they truly are, to find and follow their bliss.
Bullying, Fear, And The Full Moon (Part Three)
As I got a bit older Bill began taking me out to some of his favourite haunts. We smoked Dunhill cigarettes and we drank whiskey from a mickey he kept in the glove compartment of the Beetle as we drove through Stanley Park. He talked to me of music and of the meaning and value of friendship and loyalty.
Death of a Neighbor
Today, we watched his body being removed from the house he no doubt lived in for decades. Yesterday, I noticed that he hadn’t been outside, and I wondered innocently enough if he had “gone on vacation or something.”
Bullying, Fear, And The Full Moon (Part Two)
Professor Wolke points out that “the worst outcomes we found [were] for those children who were bullied at school and bullied at home. Just imagine the child: you go to school and you get victimized there, and then you go home and the same thing happens there – because these are children who don’t have a safe place anywhere.”
Your Dog as a Spiritual Teacher
Spiritual teachers come in all shapes, sizes and forms, and you may actually have one sitting at your feet right now. My dogs have been some of the most enlightening spiritual teachers I’ve ever encountered, provided I was open to and aware of the multiple lessons they’ve had to teach.
Bullying, Fear, And The Full Moon (Part One)
A person who has been bullied does not “grow out of” the fear that unremitting bullying causes; the fear simply goes underground, quietly working its poison into the nervous system of a life, shutting down passion, stifling creativity, mocking love.
Taking it to the max: The life of a serial obsessionist
Mostly I’ve loved this life of serial obsessions. It drives me to learn all kinds of things I wouldn’t have thought to learn. It pushes me out of my comfort zone to have new experiences that I wouldn’t have thought to have. It helps me shed what has lost meaning, making room for something new.
