I have always found the deep split between the spiritual and sexual in nearly all religions, including the Buddhism I practice, very troubling. While it’s possible to argue that Buddhism has less of this than Judeo-Christian traditions, I’m still convinced that there’s a gap in the teachings that has lead to an enormous amount of confusion, condemnation, and suffering. And I don’t think it’s necessary to be a monastic in order to experience these gaps – no one, I think, is really immune.
The Valley Girls Take On Buddhism
Nathan wrote a blog post about Valley Girls (remember them?) and Buddhism and soon discovered that all kinds of people read his blog, including Valley Girls.
This Body Will Be a Corpse
When t-shirts and other products carry words of profound wisdom, is this a good thing or is it just that thing consumerism does — turning every last word, object, and experience into a product for purchase?
Haunted by Cars
I have a habit. Not sure if you would call it positive, negative, or something in between. After a break-up, I find myself scanning the roads and parking lots for the ex-girlfriend’s car. Putting an End to Enemy Making
Nathan Thompson weighs in on a nation consumed by questions of religious tolerance sparked by the proposed building of a mosque near Ground Zero and physicist Stephen Hawking’s claim that God played no role in the creation of the universe.
The Beauty of Deception
What’s so striking about the art of Arthur Davies is how little they give us a hint of either the turmoil of the times, or the psychological and actual turmoil of his personal life. Filled with young, beautiful women, perfected landscapes, and sensuous colors, Davies’ paintings seem almost completely unscathed, as if he was able to channel the paranoid, guilt ridden tenor of his life into a collection of visual dreamscapes beckoning us to come and rest in.
How to Respond to the Building of Controversial New York Mosque
Nathan Thompson reflects on some of the vicious and destructive comments by people who are against the building of a Cordoba House mosque and Islamic cultural Center near Ground Zero in New York.
