I have not run in a week. Until this morning. The eastern ridge was red and gray — fires in the east. The quiet of summer lay easy on the land. The run was slow and not easy. There were two odd looking folks delivering the paper from bags slung over their shoulders. He was bearded, round shouldered, a bit scruffy, you know, hobbit like. She had a long ponytail, waist length, almost blonde, almost gray, which swayed side to side, more youthful and childlike than she was. Her rimless glasses reflected the street light overhead. They shuffled from house to house, one dropping the paper on the front porch, the other waiting on the sidewalk. I last saw them crossing the street, talking like lovers do.

Sometimes it’s just better to leave the bar early, go home, do some work. Sometimes not. Apparently writing is where you find it, but equally, you have to look for it. Every day.

I ran for the third day in a row. Could be habit forming if done another 18 times in a row I’m told. Oh wait, I already have this habit. Getting older, slower. But then again, truth be told, I was younger once and still slower than I used to be. How did that happen? Oh well, pump it up and get down with it. Word.

I ran for day #4. So much faster, slimmer, taller, younger, leaner, darker, smarter today. Okay already. Not so much. More like lightning in a bottle. This last is not a great metaphor for an ol’ time runner and gunner like me. Oh well. 17 more days to go and a serious habit will be reconstituted. Big debate this morning — Go Garmin? Go Polar Heart Rate Monitor? Go nekkid, save shorts shoes and shirt? Answer? Just go goddammit, just go. In a good way.

Go nekkid! Go nekkid!!
(Srsly. Tech tools are for douchebags. It’s a slippery slope–first a Garmin, then a Polar, then it’s five-fingered discounts on five-fingered shoes, and the Garmin was just the gateway all along. Don’t! Do! It!)
