Sports is one of modern times most important cultural phenomena. Nothing can bring people together in the same way as sports can do. A clear example of this is the World Cup in football (or soccer, depending on where you’re from) which tends to draw a viewership of over 2 billion people.
This is something that is completely unlike anything else that one can find in modern society. Stadiums are one of the only places where people of all different backgrounds and political views can come together regardless of what they think about each other outside of the grounds. It gives people entertainment and meaning, regardless of whether they’re following their favorite team trying to win a difficult away game or if they’re talking to their friends about which nfl odds to place their bets on.
Sports can promote positive change
Sports is one of the most powerful tools that one can use to promote positive change. This is not only through actions such as those of LeBron James and his I Promise School, but sports can showcase that hard work and dedication to a craft will lead to good things in life.
It also helps young people with invaluable life skills. Becoming a part of a team and working together towards a common goal are experiences that can then be brought with them into adulthood and make them better members of society. Learning how to tackle adversity and what it takes to be successful at something is something that should not be taken for granted.
A healthier population
Promoting sports in all aspects of society is something that can have massive benefits for a population as a whole. By promoting both exercise and amateur sport to the adult population, who as a whole could use more exercise, one gets a healthier and happier population. This can be anything from shooting some hoops down at the park or going for a long stroll in nature.
Sports can act as a fantastic social meeting place for people both around the games and in regular life. Stopping to chat with your neighbor or coworker about the game last night and how horrible your favorite player performed is a social action that might seem trivial but actually helps us form better connections with the people around us. This can come in many different forms, all from ranting on forums about how the coach needs to be fired to discussing what the best nfl lines for that weekend are.
