Your home is your sanctuary, and it is important that you make it as inviting and comfortable as possible, to yourself and others. Relaxing, meditative spaces within and around your home are vital to mindful living as they give you space to think clearly and unwind from a fast-paced day. Whether you want to add small touches or completely overhaul your home inside and out, doing so with the goal of fostering relaxation in mind is a solid plan.
Why Relaxation Is So Important
Relaxation isn’t just something that we can engage in to help us de-stress from the rat race. In reality, the benefits of relaxation run deep and can actually work as a great form of preventative healthcare as it helps to manage the symptoms of a huge range of illnesses. Everything from sleep problems, tension headaches, high blood pressure, and even irritable bowel syndrome can all be reduced and even prevented when someone is able to experience regular relaxation.
The key to meditative practice is through the ability to become relaxed so that you can gain a greater level of focus and clarity. Beyond the many physical health benefits that regular relaxation and meditation can provide, there are also a host of mental and emotional well-being benefits to be had. Relaxed meditation can reduce anxiety and depression, increase self-awareness, boost creativity, bolster tolerance and patience, and help to develop tools to combat stress even when relaxation is out of the equation.
There is no doubt that relaxation and the meditative state it can help you accomplish are beneficial to your physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual health if practiced regularly. However, it can be difficult to engage in active relaxation when life is busy and your home simply does not have anywhere that is conducive to relaxation. Relaxation requires a space that is quiet, comfortable, and allows you to quiet and focus the mind.
Things You Can Do Inside
Creating a relaxing area within your home can feel like a daunting task. Many people don’t have the space to dedicate to a full-fledged, purpose-specific meditation room, or are worried that they lack the expertise required to design a relaxing space within their home. The truth is, you don’t need to have a full-blown room that you have sectioned off for relaxation, and if you need design inspiration you can simply crib from interior designers that you admire.
If you have space and time for it, dedicating an entire room to become a relaxation oasis in your home is certainly worth the effort. However, if you don’t have the capability to do so, you can simply dedicate a corner to relaxation or incorporate elements of relaxing design into your home overall. Even something as simple as painting a room a color that you find relaxing and having plenty of functional and decorative pillows around can go a long way in inspiring relaxation in your home.
Creating a relaxing space in your home doesn’t have to break the bank in any way, but if you want to go all out and completely redesign a room or even your entire home, there are plenty of financing options available for home improvements. While there are plenty of guides out there that can help you design a space for relaxation in your home, the final design is really up to you and what inspires you to become relaxed. There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong as everyone has a different reaction to different colors, music, or anything else that you might implement in your relaxation space.
Creating A Relaxing Outdoor Space
The outside of your home has just as much, if not more potential to become a zone for relaxation and meditation as the inside. After all, getting in touch with nature, even if it is just in your back yard, can be a great way to boost relaxation from the get-go. A relaxing outdoor space isn’t just for the summer, either, as there are plenty of ways to create a year-round outdoor space conducive to relaxation that will allow you to get your zen on even in the middle of February.
One of the easiest ways to achieve a sublime, relaxing outdoor space is to implement some sort of water feature. Bubblers, fountains, and stacked stone waterfalls can all provide a relaxing soundtrack to your time in your outdoor relaxation space and even adding in a small pond that you can stock with fish gives you something more hands-on yet still simple to do while you’re enjoying your time outside.
You can also plant your own meditation garden which is a relatively inexpensive way to completely transform an outdoor space. Planting aromatic perennial flowers and shrubs will fill the area with a pleasant scent year after year, and ornamental grasses grow tall and sway in the wind offering a relaxing visual and aural component to your outdoor relaxation space. Even something as simple as installing a fire pit where you can contemplate your day while watching the fire burn is a great way to foster relaxation in your outdoor space.
Whether you want to go big or small, taking the time to design your own relaxation space in or around your home is well worth the effort. Not only are these spaces visually pleasing, but they also offer a whole host of benefits to your body and mind. What you end up doing to relax is ultimately up to you, but having a dedicated space for relaxation is a great place to start.
