A pleasurable week, or a weekend, dedicated to discovering culinary delights in Vienna is an excellent way to make the most of a short holiday. Breaks to Vienna are perfect for foodie travellers who want to achieve a fun-filled vacation and enjoy sumptuous meals at the same time.
City of dreams
There is a well-known programme entitled ‘Vienna: City of Dreams’ which explores the art, music and architecture of this fascinating city. Another dream-worthy attraction in this historic city is the delectable Viennese cuisine. Vienna is internationally famous for its cakes and cafés and has given the world Wiener schnitzel, Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel; what better place for gastronomic adventures than this ‘City of Dreams’?
Wiener Schnitzel
The city of Vienna invented, presented and gave its name to Wiener schnitzel. This is tender meat in a delicious coating of bread-crumbs where the tastiness and crunchiness of the coating contrasts gloriously with the tenderness of the meat, and is usually served with potatoes and salad. Many places world-wide have local variations and local names for this dish, but dining on traditional Wiener schnitzel in Vienna itself is a must-do and very satisfying experience.
Sachertorte
When Austrian Chancellor Prince Wenzel von Metternich gave a banquet in 1832, his master-chef was suddenly taken ill just before the dessert. The sixteen-year-old apprentice-chef, Franz Sacher, had to take over and deftly whipped up a rich chocolate cake. His creation saved the evening and has been a world-wide success ever since. This dark chocolate delight with apricot filling has many imitators but the original recipe is secret. Ideally, to experience that authentic historic feeling, it should be sampled at the Sacher Hotel, established by Franz Sacher’s son in 1876.
Apfelstrudel
Delicate fluffy pastry embraces a dense filling of apples, raisins and cinnamon. This is Apfelstrudel, a delectable Viennese tradition dating back centuries; the oldest known recipe is from 1696. A traditional strudel variation is creamy and delicious milk-cream strudel.
Vienna’s famous cafés
Enjoy fragrant coffee together with scrumptious cakes and pastries in one of the city’s renowned coffee shops.
Apart from Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel, Vienna’s long-standing tradition of desserts and sweets also includes sweet pancakes, fruit-filled dumplings and typical cakes of every kind.
The ‘City of Dreams’ has much to offer, not least culinary delights to please every palate. Gastronomic travellers, especially sweet-toothed ones, will be well pleased with the Vienna experience.
