People since the Paleolithic times have revered goddesses. Archeological finds around the world of the earliest god-like figures are of a fertility goddess, a female to whom ancient cultures turned for protection and longevity. Yet modern cultures seem to have forgotten all about the divine feminine. What are we missing?
Today’s hyperconnected world means most of us have little time to unplug, tune out and turn off a never-ending stream of demands, interruptions and competing priorities. Women especially, but more and more men in today’s society, feel guilty when they take time for themselves. They suffer from a general sense of emptiness without knowing why.
By tapping into ancient wisdom from various cultures, we can develop the awareness we need to take the time in our daily lives to receive as much as we give, with as much satisfaction.
The first step: Listen
The Celtic goddess of healing, Brigit, teaches us to take the time to listen to our body. Have a five- to 10-minute nap if you feel tired; the dishes will be there later to put away or wash. Get a massage instead of medication. Go in the backyard and watch the sunset. Go outside and marvel at the beauty of the moon and stars, and consider how many people have looked at the same stars for ages.
We all are capable of miracles and of healing ourselves. We just need to slow down and listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. When we are constantly giving energy to others without pausing to give it to ourselves, we run into trouble and start feeling bitter and resentful toward the very people we love most.
The next step: Include yourself
Remember the one person you truly should love the most: You! The Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, can help us become comfortable with ourselves and value who we are. Look into the mirror every day and say to your true inner Aphrodite, “I love you,” and repeat daily. Such an affirmation, over time, will help balance the giving and receiving sides of your energy.
You will enjoy the balance.
