Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Zo Clark make friends with Somchai, a young bull elephant who has been returned to the wild in the Sublangka jungle, Central Thailand. Somchai is a tusk-less male, which is a recessive gene rarely seen in Asian elephants but now becoming more common as elephants are increasingly being hunted down for their ivory tusks throughout Asia and Africa.
Somchai is one of the elephants in Sims and Clark’s 30-minute film “Return to the Forest” which premieres on www.worldelephantday.org August 12, 2012, which is the first World Elephant Day.
The film is narrated by actor William Shatner.
Watch for Patricia’s upcoming article here at Life As A Human about the film project,
elephant issues and World Elephant Day.

A fascinating example of evolution protecting a species from their most oppressive predator: man. I so look forward to the film. Thank you Patricia and Michael for your work, and thanks Life As A Human for promoting this important film.

This is amazing that the male wasn’t born with tusks due to a need, natural survival, caused by being hunted down for their ivory. I love elephants, what a noble animal and to be treated so carelessly is so sad. Thanks to people like Patricia Simms & Michael Zo Clark to bring this to our consciousness, and prevent further suffering to the elephants. Also, thank you LAAH for bringing great info and stories like this to the forefront.
