Here eccentricity is acceptable, a place where a former north Queensland crocodile wrestler can charge visitors a $2 donation to look through his dugout, filled with erotic and weird artwork, its walls festooned with thousands of pairs of bras and knickers “donated” by visiting female tourists.

The Old Catholic Church
As a Roman Catholic, I was curious about the little blue and white church in my neighbourhood, which turned out to belong to the Old Catholic Church of BC, a community that welcomes everyone without judgment. After passing the church numerous times, I finally decided to attend Mass there. I was warmly received, but the experience of the Mass was a bit strange for me.
Middle of the Night: A Mom’s Reflections
I can set the clock by Hamish. It’s 2:30am and just like every other night he’s up to have a feed. I have woken up at that point in sleep that makes me feel as though I’ve been drugged. When I pick him up, all of my concentration is on making it from the bed […]
Pal Jimmy: Six Toes, Endless Love
Up until this point I hadn’t realized what this cat meant to me. He is my companion while I sit at home, lost in the struggle of writing for a meager living. When the world beats me up pretty badly, which it does at times, Jimmy plunks his 14 pounds down on my chest looks me in the eye and lets me know he’s there for me as long as I keep opening the can.
Jane Goodall on What Separates Humans from Apes (TED Video)
Someone asked me the other day which woman I admired most. There are so many incredible women in this world, but one of my first choices would have to be Jane Goodall, the famous primatologist, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and UN Messenger of Peace. I am thankful for this brilliant yet humble woman who has devoted […]
My Life in Fast Food
I love fast food. I’m clearly not alone in this — it is, after all, a multi-billion-dollar industry. There are a lot of things that have made it such a successful business: the price, the convenience and, of course, the flavor. All of those things work on me just as much as anyone else, but […]
Oh, To Be A Drunk Methuselah
As the sock was pulled along her leg and past her ankle, a fine cloud of dry skin, speckled with larger flakes, sprung into the air. Breathing solely through my mouth had solved the foot funk problem, but it backfired when it came to flying skin. I felt a large flake fly past my uvula and stick to the back of my throat. Death snuck in under cover of old lady skin.

A Reluctant Hiker in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque Rain Forest
I love to play golf and basketball, watch football and even fish (I mean I will even bait my own hook), but camping and hiking, well, that’s a different story. See, I had my fill of camping and hiking during seven years with the U.S. Army. Now my idea of camping is the Holiday Inn […]
My Perfect Graduation Ceremony
Graduation? I didn’t understand what the big deal was! Why would I waste a whole day in stuffy high school gym getting bored with the long speeches?
