I didn’t know him
as a child
I never heard his laughter
I wasn’t there
when he had a bad dream
I watched him grow up
through a handful of photos
I never knew what he was afraid of
I didn’t know the name
of his best friend
Then I saw him
one day
but I never knew
if he needed advice
I didn’t know
what made him blush
I met a man years later
and he told a story
with his heart
I listened to his laughter
and knew the fear
that guided his path
I understood his questions
admired what he believed in
I was there
this time
to witness who he’d become
grateful for open arms
honored to know him
