Thanks to a new process of creating material yourself, the way we perform tasks – both professionally and personally – has changed decidedly. 3D printing has allowed people to do things in ways never thought of before. As you will see, this process has changed many people’s lives significantly.
How Do 3D Printers Work?
Before we can discuss how much of a difference 3D printing has changed our lives, we need to discuss how they work. According to brilliance.com’s blog, “These printers create three-dimensional objects from digital files by printing layer by layer, with each layer being an accurate, thinly sliced, horizontal cross-section, until the object is completely finished.” The blog continues by saying, “The printing process merges layers seamlessly, and that’s the great success of 3D printing.”
Industry
The process has become so popular, that the industry will reach skyrocketing heights in a short amount of time. Brilliance.com’s blog agrees. “It is expected that the value of the 3D printing industry will increase by about $20 billion in the next 5 years. If the predictions are true, 3D printers will become ubiquitous in the industrial process, changing the way we live and work.”
They also discuss how 3D printed implants and prosthetics have been helpful in recovery. In fact, “‘Bio-printing’ is based on the creation of tissues using living human cells with the help of 3D printing. Though still in the research stage, it will surely be part of the medical mainstream by the end of the decade.” The same can be said for the jewelry industry. 3D printing now aids in creating metal castings, which makes things so much easier.
Changing The World
Rick Smith, a reporter for “Forbes” magazine also agrees that 3D printing is changing the world. In fact, he predicts that the process “will change the way things are produced more in this century than the industrial revolution did over the last 300 years. He gives the example of Arie Kurniawan – an Indonesian man who beat out several people in a General Electric competition to “redesign the bracket that attaches a jet engine to an airplane wing.” 3D technology helped him create a new design technique. According to Smith, it passed every durability test, and weighed 83 percent less than the part that it replaced.
Teaching
Using 3D printing, teachers can build models, projects, and other materials that will help improve each lesson. These low-cost replicas cost less, which is always great for a teacher’s bank account. But, it also allows educators to give hands-on lessons that they could not teach prior to the process.
According to We Are Teachers, there are several ways to include 3D printing into a lesson. You can create physical maps so students can see physical terrains. You can also create shapes that show area and fractions. Doing so allows kids who are still in the concrete stage of learning to see how each figure takes on different dimensions.
Housing
Home builders can also rejoice. 3D printing also allows you to create home-building materials that are just as efficient at a fraction of the cost, according to Mashable. Creating material this way also helps the environment, according to NBC News. In the future, it may become possible to “use all local material as the basis of construction.”
Conclusion
The process of 3D printing has truly revolutionized the way we do things. As a result, many industries such as the medical field, jewelry making, teaching, and housing will all benefit in great ways. 3D printing will soon allow us to create objects ourselves, and use them directly in our chosen field.
