Look at Me

Look at me
are you not curious?
or are you afraid
of what you’ll see
of what you’ll reveal
in those few moments of connection

Why do you not linger?
or are you refusing 
to bask in the emotions
to let them move through you
giving your humanness
a chance to exist

You yearn for closeness, yet you disconnect
your need to be seen remains unanswered
you communicate safely, instead
admittedly easier
less open
less honest

You create protection
and safety
your heart is separate
your dreams and desires unknown
but deep inside you reject
the distance you’ve created
the detachment you’ve allowed
you crave to know and be known
to love and be loved, in its simplest form

Look at me
curious, and unafraid
look at me
see me, and allow yourself
to be seen
look at me
linger
and in those few moments
of connection
let us reveal, with our eyes
our true selves
and feel what it is
to truly acknowledge one another
