The Oak Bay Islands Ecological Reserve lies a few hundred feet past the Oak Marina in Victoria, BC. The 205-hectare area is habitat to thousands of cormorants, gulls, shorebirds, migrating ducks, seals, otters, and the occasional orca or grey whale. Yesterday I stood on shore and got a small sample of what I would see if I take a boat trip to explore the shores of these small islands but I better play it safe and research the tides tables first. All aboard!

Thanks Steve – I love to take photos of birds – it’s very challenging. Since I started taking bird photos I have learned so much about their habits and the most important part is how our environment is affecting them. I hope to go out in a boat this season and photograph seabirds.

Hello Heather,
Thank you for your brief article and beautiful photos. We have many such treasures in this “backyard” of the Salish Sea. Whether you explore it on your own or with a active adventure group, there is always a remarkable experience to be found. The physical beauty, the historical perspective and the outdoor exposure are always welcome.
Cheer,
Steve

Hi – I found out from my friend that Mary Tod was the first child of John Tod and Sophia Lolo. She married on May 24-1864 at her parents house. She and her husband farmed sheep on Pender Island with Mary’s brother John Jr. and commuted by sailboat to and from Oak Bay.She lived into her 70’s.
Local history is fascinating.
