This weekend was the premiere of the amazing documentary, Salmon Confidential. Please watch this film which is below for your convenience.
I was shocked, angered, saddened and continue to be deeply concerned. To say the least, a moving film! Do you eat wild salmon? Farm salmon? How do you choose which? You should be concerned about the survival of wild salmon as a key species in the well-being of our environment.
And why be concerned? As you will find out through the film, wild salmon are essential to the survival of a number of species – bear, eagle, orca. Or, you may wish to reconsider your consumption of salmon due to the transferable disease now found in farm salmon and spreading to wild salmon. The primary disease is a type of salmon flu. Would you risk eating something that had a flu strain in it? If neither a concern for nature, nor for health, then consider the impact on the economy. This film will identify the huge difference between the benefits of fish farming to those benefits of the commercial fishing industry, sport fishing industry, tourism and environment.
More compelling is to take action to address the carelessness of the Canadian and British Columbian governments … as to what they are NOT doing and what they are hiding, especially the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans)! Ask about the diseases imported by salmon farming that devastated the salmon populations of Norway then Chile. The DFO is protecting the aquaculture industry, not the larger sustainable businesses of this country, nor even their mandate of the fisheries and oceans. Further the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is party to this deceit by not providing appropriate testing of farm salmon. The recent beef scandal which captured our attention was the failing of the CFIA, only to be found out by food inspection of Canadian beef in the United States. This could be coming down the road for Canada’s salmon export industry.
I encourage you to take action – share this video, make change happen! We, the people, are the Department of Wild Salmon (DWS) in saving a keystone of our environment!
