A hundred miles is still a hundred miles in the high mountains, the hard scrabble Appalachians, the rollin’ hills in the Heartland, on the rocky rollin’ coasts and, as I discovered this weekend in the Arizona desert, a place partly between here and there and parts unknown.
Throughout this year of ultras in all the places I have shot them I have been reminded of the sweep and dream of an America that I grew up with, that I dreamt about in images derived from John Ford and Howard Hawkes, Fenimore Cooper and Herman Melville, Steinbeck and Hemingway, Guthrie and Dylan, a great unknown land where courage and a man’s (person’s) destiny was their own to find if only they but set out to look for it; and more likely as not to fight for it until such time as it embraced them and set them free.
