This summer I had the fun (yes, yes, pun intended!) opportunity of checking out a secret fun. show prior to them playing a sold out concert that evening. I was in Portland, OR and some friends had the inside scoop on a hush-hush appearance that was happening at a local bar in the middle of the day.
Fortunately, my self-employment situation is such that I can take off at a moments’ notice if I need to, so I headed out to meet up with my friends at the last minute. It was a “secret” show, but of course the word had gotten out and when we got to the bar an hour prior to the doors opening there was already a line around the corner! Not to be deterred, we waited it out and ended up getting in.
Although the line seemed long, the inside of the venue was intimate, and while there were probably about 150 people that ended up getting in, it still seemed like a very small, private show. And compared to the arena where they’d perform later that night, it definitely was!
The band came out and played an acoustic set, only with guitar and drums, with the lead singer even stopping one song partway through to re-start it because he wasn’t happy with how it had gone so far! Only at a small, private show would he have been able to do that. For “We Are Young,” he had the audience sing the background vocals of “Carry me home tonight,” while he performed the main vocals over the top of our chorus.
They only played four songs, but it was the perfect way to see the band. Such a better, more intimate experience than at a huge, crowded, sold-out arena!
While I did get a picture, sadly, I did not get any video. So, here is fun. performing …
