There are people whose messages endure.
John Lennon was one of those people.
His plea, through his music and his life, that we need to “Give Peace a Chance” lives on and rises above the cynicism. What would John Lennon have thought of our world today? We will never know. But there is no doubt that his message has played a positive role in shaping our world against the forces of war, hatred and discrimination. And, like his song says, we continue to “Imagine.”
Earlier today, a crowd gathered at the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park’s Strawberry Fields. Birthday celebrations started on Friday in Lennon’s hometown of Liverpool where a peace monument was unveiled. Lennon’s his first wife, Cynthia, and his son Julian attended the celebration and joined in singing Give Peace a Chance.
“I think the mourning is over for John. I think it’s time to celebrate,” said Cynthia Lennon.
Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum dedicated a time capsule to honour of Lennon. It held books CDs, DVDs and two notes written by Yoko Ono. The capsule will be opened in 2040, on Lennon’s 100th birthday.
