At a time when I needed my family and friends the most, they were there. A story of love, and how a wooden bowl became a symbol of everything beautiful at a time when it felt like life was anything but.
Sharing The Warmth
As humans tend to take down fences and link hands during a time of strife, so does Mother Nature. Some species are reputed to be so spiritually and telepathically advanced, we can only stand in awe at a miracle of gathering of one of nature’s tiniest subjects in the struggle to survive.
The Odd One Out
Superstition is not a gift, nor, necessarily, a blessing or curse. What it might be is a state of insecurity and disharmony.
To Share A Smile
When facing fears, perhaps a shared feeling from somebody else, a friend or not, just anybody who can say “me too”, is the best armour there is.
Sporting Compassion
When I think of intense sports rivalries such as the Super Bowl or the Olympics or the Stanley Cup, the moments that settle into my heart are not those of the winners holding medals or fabricated prizes high over their heads, but rather of the instances of humanity shared in brief encounters of forgotten competition.
Lump
I find it by accident, not during a routine check, not that I am very vigilant about those checks, even though at my age it is prudent. Instead I am changing into sleepwear when I notice a raised area … a lump. Lifting and checking, sure enough, there is definitely something there that hadn’t been there recently (I may not do the pharmacy-poster check, but I am no stranger to my body).
Purging the Pure
Genocide, racialism, the Holocaust, they are each horrific examples of purity being deployed as a justification for crimes of war. They are the worst examples, antithetical, ultimately, of what it really means to be righteous. And who is it who declares that these people are ‘sub-human’? Who is it who cannot see past their opaque egos?
Multiculturalism in Action
The spacious dining room was buzzing with the lively accents of women from Israel, Hong Kong, Germany and the Philippines. Others born in Mexico, Thailand, the U.S., Indonesia, and yes, even Canada, completed the luncheon group that day, an intercultural gathering of friends who have shared times like these for the past 25-plus years.
Casting Couch
This poem speaks to the need for artists to work, and at what cost some pay. It addresses those who use the dreams of art to manipulate and in some cases ruin the purpose of art.
