4 am
rare flash
of lightning
across the Bay
into my windows
the sound of rain
drops
first tapping
then thumping
threatening
to break
through
I breathe
locate the silence
deep in the heart
and listen
The windows rattle
and the shadows
of trees
jerk far
to the right
In the middle
of the storm
water
floods
the streets
the creek beds
the basements of
buildings
everywhere
resisting
containment
I breathe
I breathe a long
deep
breath
open my eyes
and listen
hear the sound
of our voices
in the water
on the ground
hear the beating
of our beautiful hearts
in the trees
hear the rain
and the thunder
suddenly
go silent
And I know
that in an hour
the sun will rise
I know
that it will rise
to awaken
us all
