Integration of Casual Primitive Means with Discerning Modern Ends

How did you get started with art?

When I first started scratching the surface, art started surfacing.

That was even before I held a pen in my hand over 60 years ago.

I might not have recognized this as art then, but now I understand.

What do you do for inspiration? What keeps you going?

I don’t do anything intentional to stay inspired, I have a natural tendency to create, my inclination is to move with the flow of the grain, I am only being myself.

Have you found that your art (and writing) helps you to find peace in the midst of hard times?

Some people chew their fingernails, I doodle as a habit.

There are certain therapeutic aspects to this which happen automatically.

It provides a focusing point, as in meditation. like breathing like a yogi.

Most people just breathe into their lungs, but a yogi naturally takes a breath deep into the guts. It takes an effort for the ordinary person, but it is effortless for the yogi.

What would you like to see happen with your art? Do you want exposure, fame, money, or something else?

I would like to see it go around, like crop circles in a way, inspiring others directly or indirectly satisfies me enormously.  Fame, fortune comes with promotion and recognition. I would not deny it, but I’m also skeptical. I am aware that promoters, e.g. galleries, marketing tools, and in particular art collectors determine most of that.

If you could give a few tips to aspiring artists, what would they be?

Artists do not need aspiration. Would-be artists do. Art has to come spontaneously from within the artist. Inspiration, though can cause aspiration.

The Suboriginal manifesto defines this process as a new, particular art form.
Automatism is a prerequisite for the initial phase, without conscious direction,
the next and final phase takes place when cutting edge techniques are applied,
visually interpreting and treating the original drawing with contemporary tools.
The two opposites merge, the raw scribble refined by using advanced methods.
This is the integration of casual Primitive means with discerning Modern ends.

“I was born in Istanbul in 1947, in an Islamic country as an Armenian Christian.

I have often been subject to discrimination in Turkey, which incited me to leave for England in 1965; as a student I studied Art, literature, drama, theatre and film.

I immigrated to Canada in 1971, upon Trudeau’s invitation. (Cultural Mosaics).

I created ‘The Dream Factory’ on Queen st.E, in 1976-1980 Toronto. Famous for diverse happenings, parties, theatre, concerts, festivals as such, a well known ‘underground multi media circus’ of the times.

I have been a globetrotter, have traveled around the World, my drawings and paintings are scattered all around the globe.

I often associate with artists, poets, writers, travellers, creative or spiritually inclined people.  I am a naturalist.

I dislike competitions. I love to play, but I seldom play games. I am an outsider, I have never been a conformist.

I adhere to the principle of personal integrity, I paint and write poetry because I love it, not because I have to show a profit.

My works usually carry a price tag, they may have a value attached, however as a person, am not for sale or rent.
