In the Musical Series I was not interested in depicting the exact details of a particular instrument. I wanted instead to try and portray the feelings evoked by the music made by that instrument. I often used a lot of red in the paintings to bring to mind ideas of vibrant, passionate music and hot steamy nights in jazz clubs and similar places.
The colour palette in this work is much lighter than I usually use. I started with an orange underpainting and tried to create an energetic feel to the brushwork as I continued building up the composition. You can see a lot of the orange underpainting showing through.
In this painting of two Violas I fractured the composition to make the painting look more interesting. After creating an underpainting of many colours I overlaid the composition on to the canvas and then began to define the shapes. The glowing colours are a result of many layers of transparent colour.
