As a landscape painter, I find the varied terrain in the western US quite inspirational. The beauty of California particularly touches my heart and soul – from the verdant hills of the wine country to the majestic coastline.
I’m moving towards simplifying my landscapes into basic shape and color-inspired forms. I’m also playing with texture, combining brushwork and palette knife applications to mirror the texture of the land and sea. My goal is to capture the evocative feelings of experiencing the scene in person.
While cruising the coastline, I discovered the Pigeon Point Lighthouse just north of Santa Cruz in Pescadero. Paintings would certainly emerge. Following my inspiration is like following the light. Whether one seeks the light in life, art, their heart – or for those seafarers seeking safe harbor – light offers refuge and delight.

Debbi Smith Rourke Artist Bio
I’m a fifth-generation Austinite. I find the mystique of the Texas hill country alluring. The lands, terrain and lighting I encounter on my travels hold a fascination as well. I take photographs to help me remember the initial inspiration for my landscape-inspired works, and then complete them in my studio. Whether working in landscape or still life mode, I’m passionate about simplifying shapes, exploring unexpected color and experimenting with texture as I move between representation and abstraction.
I have a B.S. in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin and have worked on the creative and writing side of marketing for over two decades. I have taken art coursework from The Contemporary Austin Art School and enjoy taking workshops from renowned artists around the US. I work in my home studio in Austin and teach painting lessons to children and adults. My color and shape-inspired works have been exhibited in galleries, museums, public spaces and festivals around the US, and many have found their way into private collections.
