You don’t have to be a professional photographer to enjoy nature. It can be as easy as exploring your backyard with a macro approach looking for the small little things such as bees, caterpillars, birds, etc.. I have spent hours laying on the grass in the back yard watching bees and dragonflies do their thing.
In our city, my wife and I live within a very short walk to a lose to a nature trail. Once after a fresh snow fall, I hurried down to the trail and found a beautiful pileated woodpecker searching for food, I was able to capture a very nice image of him with some light snow falling in the background.
Sometimes nature is not about what you see, it’s about just being there, listening to the sounds of nature and enjoying the moment. One time after 3 hours of being in a photographers blind waiting for wildlife with no subjects coming forward, I had an inner sense that a coyote was going to howl, I mentioned this to my wife and within10 seconds a coyote howled once. This was about 3 hours before sunset and not a normal time for them to howl.
You will be amazed at how relaxed you will feel after taking a nature walk or just picking a spot to look at your surroundings. Once on a grizzly bear photographic expedition, I came across a very large overturned evergreen tree with it’s trunk turned upside down and I thought to myself “wouldn’t it be great if a bear came into this scene to complete the picture that I had in mind”. After only 30 minutes of waiting, this is exactly what happened..
However, I had a similar wish in viewing leopards in South Africa and I had to look for 5 long days to find a leopard and a few more days to get the image that I wanted. You have probably seen great images of polar bear mothers and cubs, not realizing that the photographer may have had to wait in minus 40 temperatures for days to get that opportunity
On a recent trip to Iceland I was fortunate enough to see incredible formations of the Northern Lights over the North Atlantic Ocean, it was worth staying up until 2 am to view this jaw dropping formations that nature painted for me to photograph.
Fortunately for you, nature and it’s beauty can be minutes away, why not de-stress and enjoy!
