“I am always fascinated by sitting down in a fairly comfortable manner, hands on my steering wheel, driving through the city and watching stuff in glorious colour that passes through my peripheral vision every day” – David Allen

David Allen Artist Bio
David Allen grew up in Cheltenham, England, and immigrated to Canada at 18 years of age. “It was the 60’s”, he said, “the only career choices were rock star or photographer”. David ran a professional studio for over 30 years. Shooting in all media, 8X10, 4X5, 2¼, 35mm, with strobe lights, umbrellas and tripods, David has photographed everything from oil rigs to pump jacks to gold mines. He has taken photos coast to coast to coast for corporate publications, annual reports and national magazines.

The clarity is the first thing that hits me.This playing with colour reminds me of Toulouse lautrec posters.
BRAVO David!!
Paul, a few things to remember when you shoot this way. When I shoot, I’m not looking through my camera, I’m just pointing it. I preset all my settings, continuous shutter, auto focus, one hand on steering wheel, other hand on camera…a bit risky, but that adds to the excitement! Then, when I get home, I edit and select. With real film, this could be an expensive project!

In my opinion this is exciting, contemporary photography in a genre which many people currently label as “mobile art”. The extreme colour shift and familiar point of view successfully convey the manic pace of modern urban life in traffic.
