I’d been interested in the carvings from the Dogon people in Mali for quite some time. I had also sponsored a girl for several years that lived in a village in Senegal, through Plan International. After deciding to take a trip to visit the girl and bring my 13 yr old daughter with me, why not continue and explore Mali! We took a trek into Dogon world and had the most amazing experience. Hopefully these pictures can capture some of that experience.

Paul Elliott Photographer Bio

Originally from London, England and now living in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Photography has been a passion since I discovered it at a school class when I was 15.

I graduated to cinematography and have made my living shooting motion pictures.

I’ve photographed around 40 films and have won several awards, from the Sundance Film Festival and the American Society of Cinematographers.

I continued shooting still photography and in fact have become much more active in recent years.

I suppose because the photo’s to me seem so perfect, as though the settings were set up in a particular way? Yes, clear and beautiful. Perhaps it’s hard to explain to others how one feels about art? All I know is that I found your photo’s fascinating.

Djenne #1 is definitely at the top of the list of my favorite, all-time photos. It brings me to another world – a world I recognize but have never visited.

Thanks for your comment.
These were shot on B+W film then scanned and processed mostly in Lightroom.
I had some cleanup work to do first which I did in photoshop.
