I drive a lot – and we get a lot of rain where I live. I also used to work in a tire store when I was in college. I am familiar enough with tires to know that when I started a family, I wanted my wife to have a really safe ride, and that meant her car would have the best tires I could find.
My wife applauds this attitude toward tires – she was in a car in college, on the way to an out of town football game, and apparently that car had lousy tires. They were on a rainy highway when the driver lost control and the car spun around 3 times before slowing to a stop. Fortunately, it stayed on the road, and no one was hurt, but she has never forgotten that incident, or lost that fear.
I have always had a high regard for Michelin tires – in the tire store, they were always the “Cadillac” of tires. When I heard that Michelin had developed a new technology, I was interested enough to look into their information. The company had developed a new tire design which provided traction when the road was wet, even when the tire tread was worn down some. That certainly would have helped when my wife was riding in the car which spun out.
What Michelin did was develop a specific rubber – with high amounts of silica and of all things, sunflower oil. That combination apparently would help keep treads on the road, when it was wet, or in cold weather. They also added a set of rain grooves at the edge of the tire, which would get wider as the tire wore down, to provide traction in rainy conditions.
As soon as those tires were available, I bought two sets – one for my car, another for my wife’s car. The grateful look I got from my wife made it all worthwhile.
