An old woman shining shoes in the courtyard of the Ayasofya Mosque in Istanbul. The expression tells the tale of a difficult life, full of hardship and need. Shining shoes is a respectable form of begging in Turkey. There are plenty of shoes to shine in this clean, well dressed country, and their services are patronized by all. Except by me, that is, wearing hiking sandals, so maybe that was the source of the frown. I remember thinking, “There, but for the grace of the gods, go I.”
We are all just an accident in time.
