Today let’s talk about being a lost child.
Usually there’s one child in an alcoholic family who gets lost in the shuffle.
I watched this happen with a friend. Lucy was a bright, gifted and talented person, who didn’t understand that about herself, and would instead fade into the background and be hard to connect with. She had learned as a child that when things got out of control, it was safer to blend into the woodwork and therefore be untouchable. If nobody noticed her, nobody could hurt her. The sad part was that the effects of the chaos still got to her, only in ways that were hard to see. She almost finished college, then dropped out and worked as a waitress, unable to claim her talents. It was a sad thing to watch, but you can always hope someone will get free of that role.
Have you ever experienced being around a lost child?
