In a post I wrote several years ago titled, It’s Never Too Late to Embrace Our Passions, I wrote the following:
“I don’t believe that our gifts have an expiry date. Clearly, as we get older, it is more difficult. Sadly, most of us consider the idea of re-engaging our gifts or our passions as impractical. It doesn’t need to be that way! Mitigating circumstances aside, it’s never too late to embrace our passions.”
Mitigating circumstances…
Along with the other things that I do, I am also a guitar player and a singer. As a guitar player, I have always feared what it might be like to lose mobility in my hands. I never really thought about the singing part until seeing this video about people who are afflicted with respiratory conditions. Truly, mitigating circumstances!
But …
Philips has empowered 18 people in New York with a way to conquer their fears and breathing disabilities. They have given them a way to achieve what they thought to be impossible: learning to sing! Moreover, through a series of films, Philips is documenting the journey of these brave people that have come to be known as The Breathless Choir.
The amazing transformation of these people culminates with a live performance of the classic song ‘Every Breath You Take’ in the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. In attendance and clearly emotional was their family and friends.
The main aim of the initiative was to mark World COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) day that takes place every year on November the 18th.
This video brought tears of joy to my eyes. Well done Philips … and bravo to The Breathless Choir!
