Most people think of cars as a means of transportation. I see much more than that, especially the ones that originated in the late 60’s and early 70’s. This was a time that found society in a phase of hope and growth, a time when people had simple desires and in many cases were able to cater to those desires. A young man with a decent job could afford many of the cars coming off the assembly lines. During that time, it seemed like it would go on forever, there was literally no end in sight.
As the 60’s gave way to the 70’s, and the gas embargo and insurance issues came to light, the classic American muscle car started to lose a bit of it’s edge. The styling was still there, right up until the 80’s hit, but the underlying engineering was governed to meet safety standards and expectations. By the early 80’s, the classic muscle car was a thing of the past, even the mighty Ford Mustang found itself sporting a 4-cylinder engine under it’s hood.
My favorite classic American muscle car will always be the 1969 Camaro. It was much more than sheet-metal and iron, it represented something. It’s flowing lines and aggressive front grill and stance all worked together to deliver a message, one that spoke to a fun-loving time where everyone looked forward to spending time outdoors in the coming weekend. Many of us would get together and cruise the city or the highways, forming a convoy of power and grace in motion. Finding examples of these cars like this classic 1969 Camaro RS in today’s world is an instant throwback to these simpler times. The care and attention to detail that has gone into it’s restoration and maintenance represents a deep love for not only the car, but the times it symbolized.
