A few days ago, my sister Carol (thanks sis!) sent me a link to this amazing video in which Tom Hanks narrates the epic story of the 9/11 boatlift that evacuated half a million people from the stricken piers and seawalls of Lower Manhattan.
Like many, I had never heard this incredible part of the 9/11 story. To me, it illustrates how true it is that humans are at their best when things are at their worst and … it gives me hope in the human spirit.

This is a testament to the amazing “Human Spirit”. We are inspired to respond during great tragedy as seen in this film. First however, in order for thousands of people to come together, to work together to help, there must be a Spirit within each individual. The best news is that there is one, in every person.
Here we are seeing the overwhelming power and strength, courage and commitment of thousands of Spirits. And from watching and experiencing the wonderful feeling of hope and giving as you watch this film, you will be connecting to your own “Human Spirit.” Your Spirit is there for you every day, invested in you, speaking to you, bringin great things to you. And yet, we are so distracted by life, the next great human tragedy is that so many of us are too busy to understand and connect with that Spirit for themselves, everyday.
May these amazing people who helped so fearlessly be always Blessed by knowing they were truly connected to the inner peace, power and wisdom of their own Spirit on this day. Imagine what else we can do when we gather together as like-minded individuals who truly care about others and the earth.
Hi Faye,
Thanks for your comment! You are so right!
If we could “gather together as like-minded individuals who truly care about others and the earth” … we could achieve anything!
Cheers,
Gil
Gil, I lived in the States when 9/11 occurred and I never heard about the magnitude of the boat rescue from Manhattan that day. Watching this film with tears streaming down my face I am captivated beyond compare by the bravery and compassion of our human kind. As the man says at the end of the film, never live your life with a should-have moment lingering inside of you. Do it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this with us. My day is richer because of it.
Tess
Hi Tess,
My pleasure! Thanks for your comment 🙂
I am grateful to my sister Carol for sending this video link in to me. Here is a little bit about her 🙂
In 2007, Carol was one of the recipients of the “Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award”. We are all very proud of her and thankful to all of the people who selflessly give of themselves to save others, often, as in the case of those in this video, with very little fanfare!
Cheers,
Gil
