In the dark and damp depths of Britain we often want to give our home a bit of Mediterranean flavour, adding a bit of warmth and life into what can be a dreary, dreary winter. And indeed summer in some cases!
Mediterranean cooking has always been something that us Brits love and it can influence our stylings and taste when it comes to our kitchen decor. If that’s you, or at least you’re considering some Mediterranean influence in your home, here are some top tips for improving your kitchen and getting a bit of inspiration from the sun-drenched region of Europe.
Warm Colour Palette
One of the simplest ways to get that Mediterranean feel is through colour. Earthy terracottas, ochre, sandy beige and warm shades of blue and green can really add this vibe, as well as painting kitchen walls in soft sun-kissed shades such as creamy yellow or warm beach.
You can complement these colours with deep blues, olive greens and warm wood finishes that really add depth and character.
Natural Materials
In the Med, natural materials are really embraced, reflecting the beauty and authenticity of the landscape. Using wood, stone and clay in your kitchen design will really provide that rustic feel.
When it comes to flooring, limestone tiles can really evoke the beauty of the Med. What’s more, you can find various subtle variations, such as Dijon tumbled limestone tiles, which can really complement Mediterranean decor in the home. Alongside that, wooden beams, exposed brick and terracotta tiles can add a real warmth to spaces.
Mediterranean-Inspired Tiles
When it comes to tiling on the walls and countertops, colour is king. You’ll find that vibrant and patterned designs can create a real focal point to a kitchen and bring it to life. Consider geometric patterns, floral motifs and bright colours that match your personality as well as the theme of the kitchen, to create visually appealing motifs and mosaics on your surfaces.
Open Shelving and Displayed Cookware
Displaying cookware and open shelving is a traditional style in many parts of the world, including in Britain. It’s also part and parcel of Mediterranean kitchens. Installing rustic wooden shelves and wrought iron brackets to display your crockery, can add real charm to your kitchen, not to mention making it easier to reach for the plates or bowls you need.
Natural Light and Greenery
Finally, a big part of Mediterranean design is allowing natural light to flourish. It helps create a bright and airy atmosphere and really enhances the beauty of your kitchen’s design.
Utilise large windows and install skylights or glass doors into the space if you can, allowing as much sunlight to get through as possible. It provides a real connection to the outdoors.
This can also be complemented by bringing in Mediterranean plants and herbs such as basil, rosemary and thyme which will not only add a touch of greenery but also some fresh scents and ingredients to use in your cooking too!
