Life is full of difficult situations that test us emotionally, psychologically, and even spiritually. Covering family, money, health, and a variety of other matters, these challenges can test us to our limits, especially if we are not prepared for them. While we hope to never encounter these situations, here are some things to consider should the unexpected take place:
– Financial Insecurity: There are a number of reasons you may face financial insecurity from insufficient income to unexpected large expenses. It is important to first find ways to reduce your expenses. Dine at home rather than eating out, conserve water and electricity to reduce your utility bills, and avoid frivolous expenses, such as cable TV. You can also look for other ways to bring in extra income, such as a second job, selling items in your home you no longer use, or moving to a more affordable home. Know this situation is usually temporary and may require some sacrifice, but can be overcome.
– Unemployment: For one reason or another, you may find yourself unemployed and needing a new job. Utilize all the resources at your disposal. Network as much as possible and look for ways to become aware of new job openings. Many universities offer career services to their alumni and other organizations may also offer assistance in finding jobs.
– Serious Health Issue: This can weigh on an individual or family financially, as well as physically and emotionally. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and frustration for all involved. During this time it is necessary to focus on what you can control. Learn as much as possible about the situation. Find healthy coping mechanisms for your own emotions and ask about setting up payment plans if the bills start to add up.
– Death of a Loved One: During this time, you will need a solid support system around you. Lean on friends and family who are able to help you through this hard time. If you are religious or spiritual, find peace and healing there. Remember to take time for yourself and strive to celebrate the loved one’s life, rather than only mourning their loss.
– Facing Foreclosure: A lender may try to file a lawsuit against you in order to gain mortgage deficiencies. As recommended here, the first step is to get legal advice in order to avoid foreclosure,. If reached out to in a timely manner, these professionals can look over your situation and help you to know what to do in order to avoid legal actions against you.
– Natural Disaster: Now is the time to prepare for a natural disaster. Educate yourself on your area and what natural disasters you may be at risk for. This might include earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires, flooding, or heavy rain or snow storms. Put important documents in a fire-resistant box and create a food storage supply for each member of the family. Educate your family on a plan should each relevant emergency occur.
– Addiction of a Loved One: An addiction can weigh on the loved ones of the addict. There are many meetings and support groups available for those whose family members or close friends are struggling with an addiction. This can give you the chance to not only share your feelings and be validated by those who truly understand your situation, but also to seek your own help and healing.
– Family Feuds: All families have their disagreements, but occasionally these arguments can cause serious rifts in family dynamics. It is especially important during these times to not engage and, especially if you are not involved in the disagreement, to not take sides. Maintain a healthy relationship with all family members and look to be a peace keeper.
– Divorce: First, you will need to work out all the financial situations. From dividing assets, to paying for the attorney and budgeting for items you will need following separation, divorce can become expensive. Be sure to work with a financial advisor to work out all the details. On an emotional level, recognize your emotions are OK and give yourself a break. You may consider going to a therapist to help work out the variety of emotions you may be dealing with.
– Rebellious Children: Hold your children accountable for their actions, but choose your battles wisely. Be sure to give positive attention for good behavior and enforce age-appropriate consequences for poor behavior.
By thinking through these scenarios in advance and taking the proper measures to prepare, you can face life’s challenges head on with more confidence, coming through the other side with brighter hope and greater appreciation for the good times.
