Rob, you've captured the essence of that story! I've always thought Atticus was a model of great parenting. The line from the book, which went something like "Atticus was the same out in public, as he was at home" captured the true beauty of the character. And could anyone exemplify that better than casting Gregory Peck in the part! I agree with Leslie, Peck is an incredible choice! Great article!

Peck is great as Finch, but the movie itself is not good. Scout is very poorly cast, as is Dill, and there's too much of the plot from the book missing from the film. For instance you never quite realise from the film quite how much support Atticus really does have from his friends and neighbours - Maudy Atkinson, BB Underwood and others, and you miss out on the whole Dolphus Raymond thing, where he drinks coke from a brown bag because people find it easier to explain his interracial relationship if they think he's a drinker.

I just happened to be flipping through the channels the other evening just as To Kill A Mockingbird came on, and of course, I had to watch it once again. Such a powerful movie and Atticus is an example of how we should treat our fellow man (and woman) even in todays world. He's a wonderful example and I think this was his best work.

Thanks for comments, Leslie.

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch was inspired casting, pure and simple. And as I'm sure many would agree, it's not often that a movie made from such a powerful work of literature turns out to be as powerful, albeit in a different medium.

Thanks again for comments!

It's amazing that Harper Lee never published another novel, and yet the one novel she did publish remains in print -- and a bestseller -- 50 years later. Atticus Finch is one of the great figures of American fiction, and Gregory Peck's Oscar-winning portrayal of him in the film is one of my favourite performances by an actor in any film. Peck was also a man of great integrity and quiet dignity -- what a fortuitous convergence of actor and role.
