I completely agree with you. We all need to recognize that there are many paths that lead to God and we need to respect and appreciate – even rejoice in – the journeys of others, which may or may not converge with our own but which are equally legitimate. The Trappist monk Thomas Keating says that religion is not the only way to find God; some may encounter God in human love, others in music, or in art….

I do know the one about the elephant! In fact, I know 2 .. but the second one would never get passed our moderators LOL
I did experience exclusivism but i should say that it was certainly not from everyone there. Alas, it was ‘by and large’ from those who could make the biggest difference in peoples lives. That’s what irked me the most.

Great analogy Gil! Reminds me of the story about the blind men touching different parts of the elephant – and describing it differently by what they feel. Very thoughtful way to present the differences in religious viewpoints. I mainly watch out these days for religions that talk about “us” and “those out there” – exclusivism like it sounds like you encountered at the Full Gospel church. I try to be more embracing these days!
