You hit me where I live! I grew up with the frugality gene on both sides, and I lived like that for the longest time. Unfortunately, I learned to overcome it ... just about the time the economy went south!
I love your writing ... so good!

Interesting thoughts...

I can't help but think of my friend that grew up in true poverty...as in not knowing when and if the next meal would come. She is so extravagant and giving with her money. Her thoughts are that she has earned it and might as well make herself happy by spending it.

I'll have to think on this!

Hey Susie, Can we find a way to replicate that frugality gene and share it with me?

Great post! Sounds like you were surrounded by people who had frugal ideas! Not a bad idea in today's economy!

I grew up constantly aware of the cost of everything and not wanting to ask for too much knowing that my folks couldn't afford it but would do everything they could to give us everything we needed and much of what we wanted too. Usually this happened because mum would go without something she needed. I have found that I am becoming my mum. I don't want my kids to grow up not wanting to ask for things because they know the cost involved, yet I want them to appreciate the value of things. It is a delicate balance and I don't think I have found it but I am still looking.

I'm very frugal about certain things. I cannot stand paying full-price for clothes--not when there is Ross and Nordstrom Rack.

I don't know about genetics - it sounds like you've been surrounded by people who are, or were, also frugal. Learned behavior perhaps? Or a little bit of both?

I'm frugal in a way that no one is my family seems to be. More like my grandparents, but they grew up in the Depression ear as well, so how much of their behavior was shaped by that I'm not sure. I also grew up in a single parent family for the most part, and my mother has never been the best with saving money, so we struggled sometimes. How much of my own frugalness came from those childhood experiences of barely having enough and worrying about tomorrow?
