I really appreciate your humor and candor. My being a writer can also be attributed in large part to my Mum, who read us British novels, Greek mythology, Bible, and all kinds of other things when we lived in far south Argentina where TV had not arrived yet. Later, in my teen years, she introduced me to Thomas B. Costain and V.S. Naipaul, to say nothing of Agatha Christie and other mystery writers. She always had a good eye for a well told story, and still does, for that matter. If anyone chances to read my new release (see it on my website), I would be delighted to know whether you think I have lived up to my heritage.

Sarah, your early-years' reading list, and progression, is VERY similar to mine. Started out with Sweet Valley High and the Babysitter's Club, and then I totally read those Lurlene McDaniel books, and some other romance ones . . . Sweet Dreams or something like that was the name of the series? Anyway, after that was Stephen King and Dean Koontz for me. I still love Stephen King novels, despite my literariness and English degree now. :) Your post was a trip down memory lane for me - thanks!!

That was awesome. And you are not alone. The writing thing never called to me (as you will probably figure out by this comment...), but I too was obsessed with death and dismemberment as a kid. I specifically remember enjoying stories about cannibalism and such in a collection of short stories that the Seattle school system later tried to ban... wish I could remember the title! Then of course, there were stories like Bunnicula and later, Lois Duncan, VC Andrews, some Twilight series that was pretty freaky.... Yeah, those were fun times!!

I remember that time of my life as well....death was an interesting, fortunately completely foreign thing. I read books about all sorts of supernatural, weird, life after death, twisted reality worlds (and Piers Anthony!). I think the genre is out there for 'grown-ups' as well - anyone read Stephen or Dean Coontz, or Michael Crichton - books that look like reality but with a twist. Maybe the escape from reality makes it a bit easier to look around and realize that things in reality aren't that bad.

That was a pretty scary time. I worried so much about what impact these books had on you, dragging you down into a dark and twisted reality you were too young to gaze upon. If you knew how many times I wanted to "forbid" you to stop reading them ... but knew that would be wrong. I am glad I resisted, look at you now! You are so awesome .... don't stop!

As youngsters, I think we are all lured into strange reading content at some point. Mine was Piers Anthony. I remember two things about his fantasy novels: puns and sex. The latter seems really out of place now--like a Pixar movie with an R rating.
