For many of us in Western society, as we “grow up” the mysteries of childhood and youth seem to age along with us. We lose touch with our imaginary friends. The hobbits, undersea worlds and angels and super heroes fade away into the background of our lives, often just winking out into nothingness like the fading music of the spheres.
We far too quickly move on to working and building our lives through our ambitions — or through what we think we’re supposed to do. The magic of not-knowing and imagination soon gets replaced with the pragmatic applications of having to make a living, raise a family and define one’s place within our society.
But what happens to that mystery consciousness? Does it atrophy? For artists, it may be their very commodity and they, more than most, retain the ability to keep this sense alive. But for others, this orientation to wonder often has no place else to go and turns to the comfort of religion where it assumes the trappings of tradition to fill that space.
For me, however, organized religion has always been a poor substitute for direct experience so I don’t find much mystery in religious dogmas to stir my soul.
So if religion isn’t a pointer, what mystery could there be today which would bring back that sense of wonder about the world? Is it art? The very question of human consciousness? What mysteries might make us think that we are not alone, that there might be a Goddess or a God or that there is some other intelligence working in the universe? Is it love or laughter?
What is it for you? Music? Where has your deep child mind gone? Is everything simple and clear to you or do you think there is more to what you can see and think?
For me there are a few things, but there is one sticking out right now as it does every spring and summer: It’s crop circle season again.
For more than 20 years the crop circle phenomena has been gathering steam throughout the world. These beautiful geometrically precise patterns are primarily found in Southern England along the lines of ancient burial mounds and worship centres.
If you don’t know what a crop circle is or haven’t seen one, you have been missing the most amazing living art installation the world has ever seen. I will leave it up to you to decide who creates these. It’s far from certain. They may be extraterrestrial or not; I certainly don’t know and speculation is time consuming. But I am a definitely a fan of the circle makers.
You are about to experience something truly unbelievable which, if you let it, might open up something long lost.
My caution to those who are first investigating this phenomenon is to consider maintaining an open mind and not just dismissing this as some elaborate man-made prank. Twenty years is a long time to sustain a prank. The fact that there have more than 10,000 circles and no one has ever being able to account for most of them is certainly awe inspiring.
Five other things to keep in mind:
- Crop circles are generally made in the dark.
- The crops are not broken but super heated and bent (man-made attempts crush and break the crops).
- Some of the designs are so geometrically elaborate you could not make them as precise as they are without having foundation lines and underlying structures that would have to be erased to produce the final design. (These lines are impossible to erase in a crop circle).
- Crop circles are huge, from hundreds of feet in diameter to 1000 feet in diameter.
- They appear all over the world.
Here’s a couple of videos to get the imagination going…let me know what you think because I am perplexed and awed. I highly recommend Freddy Silva’s book Secrets of the Field and his website Invisible Temple as well.
I generally check cropcircleconnector daily from May through September for the latest circles. Here’s the latest crop circle on July 3, 2010:

Thanks for reminding me about crop circles, Chris. For me the biggest mystery of all is life itself. Fills my head and heart with awe and wonderment.
Yes, actually…I might have forgotten to mention life itself
. Thanks for the reminder.
Great post! I am just formulating a post for my blog this week called “I Take My Fun Seriously”.
I am naturally someone who views the world through “magical glasses” in that I see signs and symbols everywhere and to me this is the greatest fun of all! However, someone along the way in my adult desire to “make something of myself” I lost this piece.
Over the last year I have been gradually reclaiming my sense of fun and whimsy. I’ve found since I’ve stopped caring what people think of me, and allowed myself to have more fun, I’m actually having more fun.
Here’s to not giving a damn about what others think! And to the mysteries of crop circles, which are part of the great Mystery itself!

Thanks Kara
I too think that these circles and this fun in life are connected. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment.
Thanks Chris,
And the mystery deepens and swirls. So wonderful, it would be hard to fall back ‘asleep’ after encountering such magnificent phenomena. Do we get them in BC?
I wonder at the alien faces though. As in a shamanic journey where our visions and guides will appear in a language we can understand, Is that generic “Alien” face shown this way because it is what we expect to see?
How much of these phenomena could be created by mass belief? Is the phenomena on the rise? As more and more people believe, could these glyphs be produced by mass consciousness manifesting? The mind boggles.
Alison
You could be right Alison… It could be some collective consciousness manifestation. How that works … Who knows?
Twenty years and over 10000 circles is amazing. Check out http://www.cropcircleconnectors.com today for the latest ones. They are stunning.
