How to Combat Modern Slavery: TED Video

DID YOU KNOW? Modern slavery is a multibillion-dollar economy that underpins some of the worst industries on earth. DID YOU KNOW? There are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today. DID YOU KNOW? The US government estimates that 14,500 to 17,500 people are trafficked into the US each year to be used as slaves.

These are just some of the eye-opening facts detailed by anti-slavery activist Kevin Bales in the moving TED video How to Combat Modern Slavery. Bales shares statistics and personal stories from his work to end slavery — and he names the price of freeing every slave on earth right now.

Bales is an author, professor of sociology, and consultant to the United Nations Global Program on Human Trafficking, who established Free the Slaves, a nonprofit that “liberates slaves around the world, helps them rebuild their lives and researches real world solutions to eradicate slavery forever.”

Free the Slaves “has developed ways to spread the message and gain resources that assign governments, the UN, business, communities and individuals specific roles in the fight to end slavery.”
