Tarmac Meditations # 24 – And So it Goes

June 30, 2010

I ran yesterday. Ran today. Six days but who’s counting? Things to love about running before daylight – early morning sleepiness, quiet streets, moonset, clouds rolling west, rivers running, stars “beginning to hide,” running east into the fires of a ridge-line sunrise, shutting down the watch, a shower, dark coffee, toast, writing — a new day, another chance to make it shine.

Independence Day came and went. A quiet day. A nap ended with sounds of gunfire becoming fireworks across the night sky. Grabbed my camera set it to ISO 100, Bulb shutter remote release, 5.6F Stop, leveled the tripod and started to shoot. “One more time, one more night” in the land of the free, home of the brave.

What kind of a day is it? It is the kind of day when I am listening to Veedon Fleece just like I never heard it before, just like Oh man, you hear this shit? This is outasight. Far fuckin’ out. Van the Man has got somethin’ goin OOOOOONNN! That’s what kind of day it is. No, really it is. I ran earlier, made list of things that needed doing, like right now. Came in the house, took the several pairs of shoes from the front mat inside the door and put them in the closet where they ought to live. Went to kitchen to get some coffee, checked email, opened iTunes so I could get my head into some words, pulled Van Morrison out of the “stack” and went to clean up. It’s now four hours later and my tarmac meditating is in full swing. It looks like lying on the couch with my eyes closed, listening to Veedon Fleece but don’t be fooled. When you are a writer this is often what work looks like. And so it goes…

avatar About Michael Lebowitz

I write and take pictures because it is my way of telling stories. I run because it reminds me, everyday, that I am here. I have no idea where the writing comes from.

What I do know is that I start with what I know and imagine the rest. In the end some of it is true and some of it is made up; memory plus time equals semi-fiction, others call it creative non fiction. And if the “I” in the piece has a different name than mine, it is fiction through and through.

My photography tells a story in a very different way. The pictures seem to come from who I was and what I care about. When the words are coming honestly and the pictures are sharp and knowing, the stories tell me who I am today.

I also write at Running Before Daylight and my photography can be seen at The Long Run Picture Company
