Tarmac Meditations #2 – Of Fog and a River

Tarmac Meditation #2: December 13, 2009

Ran early again. Always. Deep fog, haloed street lamps, moss in the trees, fresh rain, wet streets. The stars were hidden. The world was quiet save for footfall and breath. A little further today, a little faster. Time’s chariot is stilled for the moment. Waiting. There are pictures to shoot, words to write. Of time and miles and a river. My day rolls out into what has become a winter celebration in the luminous, rainbowed Pacific Northwest.

avatar About Michael Lebowitz

I write and take pictures because it is my way of telling stories. I run because it reminds me, everyday, that I am here. I have no idea where the writing comes from.

What I do know is that I start with what I know and imagine the rest. In the end some of it is true and some of it is made up; memory plus time equals semi-fiction, others call it creative non fiction. And if the “I” in the piece has a different name than mine, it is fiction through and through.

My photography tells a story in a very different way. The pictures seem to come from who I was and what I care about. When the words are coming honestly and the pictures are sharp and knowing, the stories tell me who I am today.

I also write at Running Before Daylight and my photography can be seen at The Long Run Picture Company

Love that you’re including your own pics now.

  2. The overtaking of nature into our human constructions reminds me of her dominance; yet the bridge at the top presses down so heavily I am also reminded of how we humans, in the face of nature, frame our presence every where we go. This is a black and white photo with hints of colour. There are no footprints leading away or to this bench. It’s my choice to walk away or to sit in what is unusual. Yin and Yang.
    Great stuff Michael.
