My mothers family was from Digby County Nova Scotia (LeBlanc's) and we had Rappie Pie alot growing up. About five years ago I realized the only people left in my family who knew how to make it were failing in health and I interviewed my uncle and wrote everything down and began making it. I am not nearly as good as those that came before me, but getting better over time. My uncle had a stroke shortly after passing the recipe on to me and was not able to cook again. He died this year and now I am the only one left in my family who makes it. I want to make this a part of my family holidays and pass this on to my children some day. Rappie Pie is truly a magical dish.

Your message slipped through the cracks JP! What I meant by this dish existing only in Southwest Nova Scotia is that I've never seen it for sale in stores or restaurants anywhere save in this part of the world. I'm sure many families throughout the Maritimes often make it! But it seems to at the family level ... alas, not for public consumption. Imagine what folks are missing out!

"First, a little background: as far as I can determine, râpure doesn’t exist anywhere else in Canada except in certain parts of Southwest Nova Scotia – like the Clare area, Yarmouth, Pubnico and Wedgeport."

Râpure is an Acadian dish, it can be found in New Brunswick and PEI that I know of for sure as Acadians live there as well. Perhaps this specific recipe is unique to Nova Scotia, but I can assure you that it does exist in other parts of the maritimes. Grew up with it and I am from PEI! :)

You don't need to look any further than poutine to believe that ugly foods can be delicious. Bring rappie pie to Vancouver!

How could I have lived in Nova Scotia for two years and never try it? That's it, I'm coming back this summer and making rappie pie a top priority!
